Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze)

Johnny Blaze, best known as the original supernatural Ghost Rider, is a legendary antihero from Marvel Comics. He made his flaming debut in Marvel Spotlight #5 (August 1972), created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog.

Origins & Early Life

• Raised by his stuntman father, Barton Blaze, Johnny lost him at a young age during a stunt gone wrong.

Adopted by fellow stunt drivers Crash and Mona Simpson, Johnny grew up immersed in the daredevil world and developed a close, romantic bond with his adoptive sister, Roxanne Simpson.

When Crash Simpson was diagnosed with cancer, Johnny desperately turned to the occult in hopes of saving his surrogate father. He made a deal with Mephisto (Marvel’s devil)—offering his soul in exchange for Crash’s health. The deal backfired: Crash’s illness was cured momentarily, but he perished soon after during a stunt.

Powers & Curse

• As punishment (and in a final act of spite), Mephisto bonded Johnny with Zarathos, the Spirit of Vengeance.

• Johnny transforms into Ghost Rider—a skeletal figure with a flaming skull—whenever evil is nearby or at night. He rides a mystical, blazing motorcycle and wields supernatural hellfire, burning his foes with the iconic “Penance Stare”.

• Blaze possesses superhuman strength, durability, control over hellfire, and invulnerability to most physical attacks. He also has regenerative healing, and his mystical chain can be used as an offensive weapon.

• The human Johnny struggles to retain his morality and humanity, always seeking redemption and freedom from his curse.

• Torn between vengeance and compassion, Johnny is driven by a sense of justice complicated by supernatural rage.

• His greatest desire is to break his infernal pact and regain his normal life, but he refuses to let evil go unpunished.
