Marvel Legends Werewolf by Night

Werewolf by Night is a Marvel Comics antihero cursed with lycanthropy, first appearing in Marvel Spotlight #2 (1972) by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog.

Background

The original Werewolf by Night is Jacob “Jack” Russoff, later known as Jack Russell, who descends from an ancient Transylvanian family afflicted by a werewolf curse. The curse began when his ancestor Grigori Russoff defied Dracula and was bitten by a werewolf, passing the condition to future generations. Jack’s father, Gregor Russoff, reawakened the curse when he transcribed the Darkhold—a tome of black magic—by moonlight. After relocating to Los Angeles with his mother and sister, Jack’s curse first manifested on his eighteenth birthday, transforming him into the savage but tormented Werewolf by Night.

Character History

Initially unable to control his transformations, Jack would become a bestial creature during the full moon and the days surrounding it. He sought to understand the Russoff family legacy, battling cultists, sorcerers, and agencies seeking his blood for dark experiments. His allies included mystic Topaz, writer Buck Cowan, and occasionally Doctor Strange and Moon Knight, who made his debut as a Werewolf by Night antagonist.

Over time, Jack learned of his connection to the Darkhold, a grim mystic text linked to the Elder God Chthon, and encountered supernatural threats including Morbius, Ghost Rider, and Iron Man. Accepting his beastly nature after a spiritual confrontation with his father’s spirit, Jack gained full control of his transformations, merging his human intelligence with his lupine instincts.

Personality

Jack Russell is a reluctant monster—cursed but inherently good. His story balances savagery and morality: a man who protects innocents even as he battles his darker self. Despite periods of isolation and violence, he remains guided by empathy and an unwillingness to inflict harm on those who do not deserve it.

Powers and Abilities

As the Werewolf by Night, Jack possesses superhuman strength, agility, speed, enhanced senses, and a heightened healing factor. His claws and fangs can rend supernatural beings, and in his later evolution, he maintains strategic thought while transformed. Exposure to the moon drives and enhances his power, making him a formidable combatant against mystical foes.

Legacy

Werewolf by Night endures as one of Marvel’s defining horror-genre characters, blending Gothic monster fiction with superhero mythos. The mantle was later adopted by Jake Gomez, a modern successor with his own tribal heritage and connection to lycanthropy. Together, they embody Marvel’s long-standing theme of duality—the struggle between the man and the monster within.
